Work Schedule: Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Reporting Relationship: Executive Director of Administration

Primary Accountability:
The Director of Finance will be an integral member of the Washburn University Alumni Association and Foundation (“Foundation”) team.  This position is responsible for providing leadership and vision for all financial operations, financial management services and reporting for both internal and external constituencies.  This position will also be accountable for the administration of the endowment, and support for the Finance, and Audit Committees of the Washburn University Foundation Board of Trustees.  The Director of Finance initiates financial analyses, implements approved policies and sound accounting and business practices for the Foundation. The Director of Finance also provides accounting support of the single member LLC and Washburn University Charitable Gift Fund organization both of which affiliated with the Foundation and is responsible for all accounting and reporting associated with that entity.

The Director of Finance works closely with the Foundation leadership team, and a primary contact with the University’s Fund Administrators including President’s office, Vice Presidents Office, Deans, Directors and Chairs as well as their support staff regarding private gift financial information.

Major Duties:
The Director of Finance plans, directs, administers, organizes, and supervises the following:

  • Accounting processes and procedures for business operations;
  • Provides direction and guidance to both the donor and Development Officer in the transmittal of gifts to the Foundation whether through electronic or paper methods (i.e. stocks, cash transfers or other types of gifted assets);
  • Manages the University Scholarship budgeting process for private gift funds;
    • Prepares the annual scholarship budget for dissemination to University;
    • Maintains the scholarship budget, reflecting adjustments as necessary;
  • Manages the University Non-Scholarship disbursing process;
  • All accounting aspects of the Foundation’s LLC and WUCGF;
  • External and internal financial reporting;
  • Annual audit and any special audit support and preparation;
  • Endowment fund administration, documentation, processes and procedures and,
  • Payroll and fringe benefit administration.

The Director of Finance is expected to:

  • Maintain thorough and complete financial records for the organization;
  • Maintain thorough and complete records of donor restrictions and administrative restrictions of gifts and funds;
  • Maintain processes to ensure compliance with donor restrictions which includes disbursement from donor private gift funds;
  • Prepare accurate and meaningful financial statements;
  • Assist in safeguarding financial assets;
  • Comply with federal and state reporting requirements;
  • Budget and anticipate financial problems;
  • Build bridges among constituents; and
  • Work on special projects and perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • The candidate must have completed a college degree in Accounting, Finance or related field;
  • MAcc, MBA or higher degree preferred;
  • CPA required;
  • Ten years of accounting experience, 5 years managerial experience required with experience and in-depth knowledge of accounting, auditing, administration and supervision;
  • Experience in a public higher education and foundation environment preferred;
  • Knowledge and experience in applying basic and advanced accounting principles required; 
  • Knowledge of planned giving and CASE standards for reporting;
  • Must possess strong analytical and organizational skills;
  • Must work fluently with financial data;
  • Must be versed in budget planning and management, and must be able to prioritize multiple responsibilities; 
  • Must be able to support a collaborative and deliberative decision making process and must possess the highest level of integrity; 
  • Given the director’s role with key campus constituencies, it is especially important to possess excellent communication skills; and
  • Reliable and predictable attendance.

Physical Demands:

  • Ability to sit for extended periods of time; and
  • Ability to read computer screens and mail.

Work Environment:

  • Professional and deadline-oriented environment in an office setting; and
  • Interaction with staff and campus partners.
