The Director of Gift Planning & Development is instrumental in developing external relationships to raise private financial support for Washburn University through the identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of planned and major gifts. Working collaboratively with leaders across multiple teams within the Washburn University Alumni Association Foundation and with campus partners at Washburn University, the Director of Gift Planning & Development will create strategy and execute the Foundation’s planned giving program and will organize, manage and participate in fundraising activities with individual donors, institutions and corporate prospects.
Major Duties Include:
- Set and implement strategies to grow the effectiveness of the Foundation’s planned giving program;
- Create an organizational culture where planned giving conversations with donors are a priority;
- Serve as a consultant to gift officers by maintaining a current knowledge of appropriate gift vehicles available and working to ensure the gift officers are equipped with the necessary knowledge to have effective planned giving conversations with their assigned prospects;
- Provide educational opportunities for gift officers to expand their knowledge of planned giving vehicles;
- Coordinate with staff members in the areas of data and prospect research to create new and innovative ways to identify strong planned giving prospects;
- Work closely with staff on the donor relations team to identify effective strategies to steward donors who have documented planned gifts;
- Work with the executive director of development to identify planned giving prospects within gift officer portfolio and set goals for progress toward the documentation of planned gifts by each officer;
- Manage a portfolio of 50-75 active and prospective donors as assigned by the Foundation;
- Provide consistent cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship through personal visits, telephone calls, written proposals and other communications for university priorities;
- Work to secure planned gifts and major gifts of $25,000 or more;
- Meet deadlines for productive work;
- Travel outside the office and throughout the nation, as appropriate, to build relationships and secure major gifts;
- Attend university and community social and civic events and functions where relationships with probable donors are strengthened; and
- Perform other reasonably related duties as needed.
- Bachelor’s degree required;
- Seven years of fundraising experience in a university setting preferred, face-to-face major gift activities preferred;
- Successful experience in professional settings personally soliciting gifts of $100,000 and above;
- Highly developed interpersonal skills;
- Highly developed verbal and written communications skills;
- Strong organizational skills;
- Strong analytical skills;
- A track record of portfolio management meeting yearly solicitation goals;
- Professional history showcasing ability to meet high (15+) face-to-face monthly prospects;
- Ability and desire to work effectively as a team member;
- Ability to exercise good judgment, ethical behavior, discretion, and confidentiality;
- Passion for philanthropy, Washburn University and gift solicitation;
- Driver’s license with satisfactory driving record required; and
- Reliable and predictable attendance.
- Ability to sit for extended periods of time;
- Ability to use computers and telephones effectively;
- Ability to travel regionally and nationally with air travel and overnight travel expected;
- Ability to unpack and move supplies up to 50 lbs.;
- Ability to work some evenings, weekends, and attend special events; and
- Ability to drive.
